American Creole Indian culture is strong in south Louisiana

By  Nikki Buskey Staff Writer Houmatoday.com HOUMA — Though known for the strong vein of Cajun culture that runs through it, Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes also host a small but vibrant community of American Indians. In fact, the Terrebonne community of Houma is named for a local tribe that built a village called Chufuhuma or "Red House." That village was on the site of modern-day Houma. "We have a rich history here in southeast Louisiana, and we have survived through all the hardships, all of the challenges we have faced," said Brenda Dardar-Robichaux, principal chief of the United Houma Nation. The Houma tribe got its start further north, near Baton Rouge. The capitol city's name, which translates to red stick, describes Houma Indian boundary markers encountered by French explorers trekking through Louisiana. The Houma Indians were uprooted during colonial struggles and relocated to what's now Terrebonne in the 18th Century, ul

Dr. Laura Schlessinger: racist & hypocrite?

We already know that Dr. Laura is a publicity whore and a photo slut, but a slick-ass racist too? Dr. Laura apologizes for saying N-word on the air The Associated Press LOS ANGELES - Talk radio host Dr. Laura Schlessinger has issued an apology for saying the N-word several times in an on-air conversation with a caller that she said was "hypersensitive" to racism. Schlessinger said on her website Wednesday that she was wrong in using the word for what she called an attempt to make a philosophical point. "I articulated the N-word all the way out , more than one time," Schlessinger said in comments from the opening of her radio show that she posted on her site. "And that was wrong. Schlessinger said she pulled herself off the air at the end of the hour. During the exchan

Corruption  is now recognized as one of the world’s greatest challenges. It is a major hindrance to  sustainable development  and is corrosive on the very fabric of society. Its disproportionate impact on poor communities is considerable, curbing economic growth, distorting competition, and representing serious legal risks. According to Transparency International’s latest corruption index, there are 75 of 180 countries surveyed scored under 3 on 10-point scale of governmental honesty. Corruption is a fixture in  Egypt , India, and Pakistan. 60% of executives surveyed in these countries reported to have been solicited for a bribe. The Transparency International compiled multiple sources from  World Bank  assessments, the Bertelsmann Transformation Index, and surveys. The following lists most corrupt countries in the world. Chief Thomas,     I am in receipt of your findings letter dated June 23, 2010 and received by hand on June 28, 2010.     As you mentioned in your letter to me, I am not satisfied with the incomplete findings from your office.  My dissatisfaction will be voiced within the venue of appeal.      But what most disappoints and confuses me, is first, your odd use of the word "perception", as it relates to VERY serious FACTS.  My second issue is the way that you have blanketed my concerns of specific individuals within your department as "members", "everybody".  Not "members" and at the most SELECT members of your department, is the issue.      My initial complaint with you entailed ONE particular individual personally accessing ACIC not anyone else. To say differently can be construed as misleading.  The MAIN part of my complaint dealt with Officer Cox's three year record of documented chronic and criminal harassment of myself and busines
