Albuquerque cop turned off body cam- arrested for beating supect

An Albuquerque police officer was taken into custody and booked Friday evening after an investigation showed he turned his body cam off before allegedly beating a suspect, reports KOB4. Officer Cedric Greer, 24, is facing misdemeanor aggravated battery charges after witnesses say he repeatedly punched a suspect who was offering no resistance during a stop. An investigation was launched into Greer’s actions after a police cadet reported him to his superiors. According to the State Police report, Greer, “… battered an individual during a call for service that he was conducting at a local Albuquerque hotel. He struck the individual’s head several times with a closed fist and then delivered several strikes to the individual’s chest causing bruising. Witnesses claimed the individual was cooperative with Mr. Greer before and after the battery.” Further investigation revealed that Greer had turned his body cam off before the alleged beating, turning it back on afterward. The National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Innocence Project found that 26 of the 28 examiners in the FBI's microscopic hair comparison unit overstated evidence in more than 95 percent of 268 trials that the groups have examined so far, the Post said. Defendants and prosecutors in 46 states, along with the District of Columbia, are being advised of the findings, which could result in appealing of convictions, the newspaper said. The cases with overstated evidence included 32 that resulted in death sentences, and 14 of those defendants have been executed or die

Jail guard arrested: allowed repeated attacks on inmate

Pulaski County Regional Detention Facility  (PCRDF)  Deputy Robert Phillips was arrested today by Sheriff’s Office Investigators on two warrants for misdemeanor Abuse of Office.  The warrants stem from an investigation into allegations Phillips allowed an inmate to be attacked on two different occasions by other inmates.  The investigation concluded that Phillips did not follow proper protocols in stopping and reporting the attacks.  Phillips was arrested this afternoon and booked into the PCRDF.  Phillips posted bond and was released from the PCRDF later this afternoon. Phillips was placed on administrative leave with pay pending a disciplinary hearing.  The general reports for the incident are not complete at this time.  Investigators are in the process of obtaining warrants for the inmates that committed the attacks.  Deputy Phillips has been employed at the PCRDF since December 2, 2013.
